A patient’s story: left out of conversations, gatherings no longer enjoyable
A patient came to us frustrated with older hearing aids and feeling increasingly left out at family gatherings, in the car, anywhere the conversation moved faster than their hearing could keep up. Family knew about the hearing loss but didn’t always adjust, which made things harder. After discussing their lifestyle, we recommended new hearing aids and a remote microphone for situations where they couldn’t face the speaker directly, like in the car. The patient hesitated because the mic meant asking family to take an extra step. We talked through what the alternative looked like, and they decided to try it as recommended. Within a few weeks, they reported being able to hear everything and fully participate. A few months later, they told me their youngest grandchild (the one most hesitant to use the mic) had gone to find it on their own when there was a breakdown in communication. That one took a moment to sit with.
