The Reid Park Zoo is a small zoo located in Tucson, Arizona. The zoo has been accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 1985. The zoo is open every day of the year except for Christmas Day and Thanksgiving Day. It is operated by the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department.
The Reid Park Zoo began as a privately-owned menagerie in 1947, and it was purchased by the City of Tucson in 1963. The zoo underwent significant expansion and renovation in the late 1990s, and it now houses more than 500 animals representing over 140 species. The zoo’s animal collection includes African lions, Abyssinian ground hornbills, Indonesian Komodo dragons, Mexican gray wolves, and American alligators.
In addition to its animal exhibits, the Reid Park Zoo also features a variety of educational programs and events. The zoo’s popular “Zoo Camp” program offers children the opportunity to learn about animal ecology and conservation. The zoo also offers behind-the-scenes tours, overnight camping experiences, and “Zoo To You” presentations that bring live animals into schools and other community organizations.
The admission rate for adults ages 15 to 61 years old is only $10.50; for seniors ages 63 years old and above, it is $8.50; for children ages 2 to 14 years old, it is $6.50. Children who are 1 year old and below are free of charge. They also offer discounted admission rates for families and individuals in the SNAP and WIC programs.
Daily activities in the zoo include Zoo Train, Cox Wildlife Carousel, Behind The Scenes Experience, Added Value Daily Activities, and Giraffe Encounter.
The Zoo Train, which costs $3 per person, is located just outside the front gates. It will go around the Gene C. Reid Park pond and operate on different schedules.
The Cox Wildlife Carousel is American made and features 30 different animal species around the world. Guardians are reminded that children who are below 42 inches must have an accompanying adult to ride with them on the carousel. The adult can stand alongside the kid, free of charge. The carousel is closed at noon time during peak temperatures in the summer season.
